Flower of love relieves joint pain

The powdered fruit of a rose can be used to ease the discomfort caused by joint pain, a study has shown.

Clinical studies have shown that GOPO – the active ingredient in the proprietary brand of rose-hip powder LitoZin – can reduce joint pain and stiffness in patients with osteoarthritis (OA). Added benefits of this include a reduction in the use of potentially dangerous pain-relieving medications and improved overall mood, energy and sleep quality.

The research, presented at the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) World Congress of Osteoarthritis in Rome, found that rose-hip powder, and specifically GOPO, switched off certain genes responsible for producing proteins and enzymes that have been implicated in inflammatory joint destruction. It was also seen to switch on genes that help produce collagen and cartilage, which are essential components of a healthy joint.

Further studies showed that rose-hip powder and GOPO inhibited the body's production of nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2 – both linked to inflammation in joints.

The investigators concluded that GOPO not only contained a broad range of anti-inflammatory properties, it could also protect cartilage cells from inflammatory assault and self-destruction.
